For January, I used this monthly check-in tarot spread from incandescenttarot.com, if you want to try your own! Each card has a specific meaning, starting from the bottom left and read left to right. Let’s get into it and remember: it’s all just silly goofy girly fun, so take what resonates and leave what doesn’t.
Your Current Self: Knight of Wands
The first card represents your current self. This is you, right now, this month. The knight of wands represents action, energy, passion, freedom, moving toward goals! It’s a card that represents a pretty good start. You might not have it together, you might not be quite where you want to be, but you know where you want to go and you have the desire and the energy to get there. There are many things you want to accomplish, and even if it feels overwhelming or daunting, you are on your (for lack of a better term) sigma grindset— you’re going to make it happen through sheer force of will. Overall a pretty decent mental place to be in!
Theme of the Month: Ace of Wands
The second card represents the theme for the month—sort of the thesis statement: what is the overall vibe? The Ace of Wands represents pure potential. It pairs really well with the energy from the Knight of Wands, actually. The vibe is urging you to act on your passions and goals. The vibe is manifestation. The vibe is bitch, you got this. It can also represent creativity, a new start, and passion. It could be a new start in your career, in your relationship, in your life in general, but be expecting a spark of some kind that pushes you somewhere new.
A Key Goal To Pursue: Queen of Pentacles
The third card represents a key goal to pursue this month, and I pulled the Queen of Pentacles. There’s a few ways to take this. First of all, whenever the Queen of Pentacles is around it generally means financial abundance in some way. But also, any time there’s a queen card it’s strong feminine energy and in this instance, the woman in this card is a boss bitch, she’s got it together, she’s generous and practical and has balanced priorities. So, take that however you will. Maybe you need to work on your work-life balance. Maybe your goal is some financial independence or security. Maybe you're just trying to be a person with a good head on your shoulders. In any case, it’s a good goal to strive for.
An Obstacle to Overcome: Page of Pentacles, Reversed
The fourth card represents an obstacle you may have to overcome this month. The page of pentacles, when reversed, represents theory not meeting practice— maybe a lack of focus, maybe a lack of follow though. It’s possible you have a tendency to start things and not finish them. Maybe you talk a big game but rarely act on your words. It’s not that you’re lazy, but there’s an undercurrent of being so afraid of underachieving that you’d rather not achieve anything at all. When a card is reversed, you can interpret in many ways, but I like to view it as asking you to look internally. The obstacles in your path are not external, they are entirely in your own head. This card is asking you to move past that fear and ACT— especially when combined with the Ace of Wands which is basically saying if you act on your energy, great things can happen. This could be your sign to take the first step.
A Major Accomplishment: Three of Wands
The fifth card represents a major accomplishment you can look forward to this month. The Three of Wands can mean a few things— one, that your efforts are paying off, which could be huge in the context of the larger reading, or two— travel, especially travel abroad. Maybe you’ve got a trip this month or maybe this is the month you finally book that trip to Italy you’ve been dreaming about! But in any case, this card is saying there will be some kind of reward on the horizon for the work you’ve been putting in, and a break and a respite from the stress you may be under.
What To Avoid: Justice, Reversed
The sixth card represents what you need to avoid this month. Justice, in any form, is a reminder to be as fair and balanced as you can be in all areas of your life. Because it is reversed, you could take it as a warning to silence your inner critic. The voice in your head might not be super fair or balanced, it might have a pretty skewed and negative view of things, and if you listen to it, you won’t be able to achieve everything you’ve worked so hard for. It could be reminding you also not to take shortcuts. But it can also just mean you’re not being honest with yourself about something, and whatever it is, it’s holding you back.
What to Embrace: Four of Pentacles, Reversed
The seventh card represents what to embrace this month. This one was tricky, because the reverse can sometimes mean greed, which is not necessarily what you want to be embracing. In this context, the Four of Pentacles reversed means finding security from within instead of from external validation or material possessions. It’s embracing a sense of self that can exist confidently without relying on what you have, and rests upon what you are. Tricky!! However, in the context of relationships, this card tends to mean you’re letting go of the past and allowing the relationship to move forward, so if you’re dating right now, it could be a sign to try to do some letting go.
Where To Find Support: Ten of Wands
The eighth card represents where you will find support this month. Great card for it honestly, the Ten of Wands represents struggle—but also generosity/giving back, and family. You may feel you have the weight of the world on your shoulders. So, who do you turn to for help? Family seems the obvious choice here. But less obviously, it could be that a way for you to help yourself would be to help others. Firstly, because sometimes helping others just feels good and might help you feel less impotent, and second, because sometimes when you help others they may help you back. In a totally selfish way, if you really need assistance, a lead on a job, a shoulder to cry on, sometimes asking what others need of you is a good place to find someone to either help you or commiserate with you. You’d be surprised how much better you can feel just by asking a friend how they’re doing.
Advice/Encouragement: King of Cups
The final card represents some final advice and words of encouragement for the month. This month, the card is the King of Cups. Strong ass card… and the only cup! This whole reading has been wands and pentacles. This is a reminder to go with the flow, stay open-minded, allow your emotions to guide you but don’t let them lead you astray. You’re in charge, you’re the boss, and when things come up that you don’t have control over, allow them to roll off your back like water. Having a relaxed attitude and staying calm can help you navigate through even the stormiest seas.
